To the RNC and
Republicans in Congress :
We are no
longer Republicans. We're ashamed of the name because of how
you have redefined it for us. We hang up when the RNC calls looking for
donations.
Though we have left the Republican party, we
have not left Conservatism. The truth is, you have left
it. We are still Conservatives -- you are not. In the days of
Reagan, the two terms were nearly synonymous. In less than twenty years,
you have destroyed any notion of similarity.
We thought you made a
comeback in '94, but soon realized that the Conservative title you wore on your
sleeve to get elected was simply a tattoo -- not an ideology you bore in your
heart.
Over the past 13 years, we have watched you become just as
smarmy, arrogant, greedy, self-serving and power hungry as the people you
purport to oppose.
In the midst of this all, you have counted on our votes
each election cycle. In the past, we gave them -- not out of ignorance, but willfully -- grimacing in the polling
booth as we pulled the lever for you -- not because you were who we
would want, but simply because you were the lesser of two evils. We voted
for you because we thought we had to vote for
you.
Today, this all changes.
We are writing to notify you
that you will no longer have our votes to count on by default. The
votes you thought you had are being held hostage and will be released to you
only if you meet the following five demands:
1. You will be honest with
us in all communication. There will be no political hedging
or posturing. When you are interviewed and asked a direct question,
you will actually answer the question directly, without framing it in
equivicating terminology. In short -- you will stop acting like a
Politician and start being an honest Representative. You will simply
let your yes be yes, and your no be no. Therefore, what you
say on Friday better be the truth on Monday. And what you say before a
group of inner city people better be the same thing you say to people in the
Hamptons. We are listening to your every word.
2. You will begin
building a security fence along our southern border in earnest. The
17.9 miles of single-layer fencing that has been built since the
President signed an appropriations bill last October, (the one
that provided funding for 700 miles of double-layer fencing), is
completely unacceptable. In case you somehow missed the message when we
shut down your phone lines, fax lines and e-mail servers over the "Comprehensive
Immigration" bill, let me put it plainly: WE DON'T TRUST YOU ANY
MORE. You have completely lost the right to promise us ANYTHING for the
future. We need to see results first... then we might listen
again. Here are some other things regarding the border that are
unacceptable:
a. 3 out of every 4
attempts to cross the border illegally is
successful.
b. An estimated 120,000
"Other Than Mexicans" got caught trying
to cross the border illegally in 2005.
c. Illegal Immigrants cost honest taxpayers $20 - $30 billion dollars per
year.
Thoughtful individuals that we are, we have a hard time squaring
this information with the way you drag your feet on having a security fence
built.
3. You will
publicly pledge to do away with
the bloated, abusive tax code and replace it with something that actually
makes sense -- like the FairTax. The current tax code creates
criminals by requiring things the average citizen will never
understand. It doesn't need to. It has created a $12 billion dollar
a year bureaucratic construct called the IRS -- it's an inefficent
waste of our money. This tax code punishes people for producing and
rewards people who do not. This is counterintuitive to even the
weakest thinker. The FairTax is the solution to every problem inherent in
the current system. You need to add it to the Republican platform if you
are going to get us back.
4. You will recognize that Federalism -- the
concentration of Power in Washington D.C. -- is a problem that needs to
be undone rather than the solution to every human woe. The
evolutionary rise of corruption in Federal Government can be traced to this
very issue. Influential money abounds in Washington only because
Washington is where the concentration of power is centered. The founders
of our nation saw this as a potential problem that needs to be stopped when
observed. You should, too -- but instead, you pursue it for your own
selfish gain at the expense of the country itself.
5. You will go on
record as one who will trim the Federal Budget down significantly. The
Heritage Foundation did a study on Government waste. Here are just a
couple of their findings:
Surely you can do better than this. In addition,
billions of dollars are spent every year on programs not allowed by the very
Constitution you've sworn to uphold. These programs have become so
commonplace that half of the citizenry think they're protected by the Bill
of Rights -- things like Education spending,
Corporate Welfare and AmeriCorps. You must stop supporting these things at a Federal
level. The Constitution and Bill of Rights are pretty well thought-out documents.
We have to assume the 10th Amendment is there for a reason. You may
lose some votes for taking this position, but you will
gain a lot more from those who used to be your base
and you will be providing a valuable service by educating the citizenry on the real limits placed
on you in the Constitution.
$24.5 billion spent in 2003 for
which you cannot account.
$90
billion spent on programs that were deemed either ineffective, marginally
adequate, or operating under a flawed purpose or
design.
$23 billion annually on
special interest pork
$60
billion annually on corporate welfare, versus $43 billion on Homeland
security.
$12 billion to $30
billion annually on farm subsidies
